Ray Kurzweil

Last night, the Graduate Programs in Software, IT & IS at the University of Saint Thomas celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a talk by Ray Kurzweil.

His talk was most interesting and focused mostly on his belief that all progress in technology follows a logrithmic curve.  We live in a linear world, but that isn’t how we should see the advance of technology; it advances as a geometric progression.  His slides were very convincing.

And the most interesting observation was that while the hardware capability doubles every year to eighteen months, that the software curve only doubles every five years of so.

Guess we have a little work to do to get on the same trajectory as the metal.
