Marma’s Date Nut Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped dates
  • 1½ cups boiling water
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2¾ cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon melted butter
  • 2 cups granulated white sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Method

  1. Put chopped dates in mixing bowl.  Pour boiling water on them and add the soda.  Set aside to cool.
  2. Mix together melted butter and sugar.  Add beaten egg.  Add to cooled date mixture then flour and salt.
  3. Add nuts and vanilla.
  4. Pour into 2 – 8 x 4 x 2½ inch bread tins place in a cold oven and bake for 2 hours at 350 degrees.

Always good with a little dab of cream cheese.
