It might be nicer not to say “sorry”: A study of more then 1,000 people in Frontiers of Psychology found that people reported feeling more hurt about a social rejection when it contained an apology and that the words “I’m sorry” made people feel obligated to offer forgiveness when they didn’t want to.

Finishing School

We’re not the top species on the planet because we’re nice.  We are a very aggressive species.  It is in us.  And people talk a lot about how well the military turns kids into killing machines and stuff; and I’ll always argue that it’s just finishing school.

Dien Bien Phu, 1954-05-07

On the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu, 1954-05-07: We should have seen it at the end of colonial era in Southeast Asia, which it really was.  But, instead we saw it in Cold War terms, and we saw it as a defeat for the free world which was related to the rise of China, and it was a total misreading of a pivotal event which cost us very dearly.
